How do I use my Vault card at gas stations and restaurants?

  • Gas stations - If you use your card to pay at the pump prior to dispensing fuel, a temporary hold of $100 or more will be placed on your card for the anticipated purchase. This hold will be released within 7 days after you complete your purchase (depending on the gas station's policies). To avoid this hold, you may go inside the gas station and pay the cashier the exact amount of fuel you wish to purchase.
  • Restaurant and other tip-based services - Restaurants, salons, barbers and other merchants who accept tips may add 20% to the cost of your purchase to cover anticipated tips. Be sure the balance on your card is sufficient to cover this extra amount or your transaction may be declined. When the merchant finalizes the transaction, usually within 7 days, the exact amount of your purchase will be debited, and any excess funds held by the merchant will be available for use.
  • Hotels - Hotels may put a hold on your funds in the amount of the expected bill, plus any potential incidental charges you may experience. The hold may last from the time you check in to a few days after you check out.
  • Auto rentals - Most auto rental establishments may require you to reserve your car with a credit card. You may be able to finalize the payment using your Vault card when you return the vehicle. Please check the auto rental establishment's debit card payment policies for details.
